According to the Gardaí, the collision took place at Carrowcushcly, Ballymote, at around 3 pm. The driver and passenger of the vehicle suffered fatal injuries when their car collided with a wall. Their bodies have been taken to Sligo University Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Forensic collision investigators are conducting a technical examination of the scene.

Cllr Gerard Mullaney, the cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and the organizers of the event. The entire county is in shock, he stated, saying, “People are stunned to hear that two people have lost their lives.” He mentioned that the rally had passed by his home overlooking Lough Arrow earlier in the day, and he was aware of the excitement surrounding the event. “It is very unfortunate that it ended in tragedy despite the best efforts of the organizers,” he added.

The incident reportedly occurred on a straight stretch of road a few miles from Ballymote. Although there had been intermittent rainfall throughout the day, locals said it was not raining at the time of the incident.

He and Mr Maguire, who was from Co Fermanagh, died at the scene following the crash in Carrigans Lower, near Ballymote.

The rally, which was being organised by the Connacht Motor Club, was immediately suspended as emergency services rushed to the scene
